The
Wurzels Are Scrumptious!
was The Wurzels' first album following Adge Cutler's
death. Following the tradition established by Adge,
the album was recorded in front of a live audience,
and included between-song banter among the boys. The
‘live’ sequences were recorded at Ruda Holiday
Park in Croyde Bay, North Devon; the studio material
was recorded in the EMI Studios.
Around
half the songs were new material and the rest were Adge
Cutler compositions, including three never recorded
with Adge: Look At 'Ee, Lookin' At I, The
Market Gardener and I'm The Captain Of A Dredger
(all three co-credited to Henry Davies).
Hidden
amidst the Adge songs and the 'straight covers', is
perhaps the most interesting track on the album. Speedy
Gonzalez was a hit single in 1962 for Pat Boone,
and the band had 'wurzelled-up' the song, changing the
words to give it a West Country feel. This shows a new
direction for the band, something which would be more
evident on the Combine Harvester album, and
would give rise to their massive chart successes.
